Raid at Martin's Station

I love history. Living history is something for which I've never had available time to devote to participation. Martin's Station is one of those key places that nobody knows about. Near the Wilderness Road, access to Kentucky, many famous Americans passed through the area in their exploration, exploitation and settlement of Kentucky.
The original Martin's Station played a relatively short but significant part in the history of southwestern Virginia and the early settlement of Kentucky. The station takes its name from Joseph Martin, who was born cir. 1740 in Albemarle County, Virginia. Following a somewhat restless early life which included service in the French and Indian War, Joseph Martin became the overseer for a wealthy relative who was closely connected with Dr. Thomas Walker. This connection with Dr. Walker proved valuable for Joseph Martin, who would eventually be selected by Dr. Walker to lead an expedition into the Powell's Valley.

To help assert the legitimacy of his land claims to the Powell's Valley region, Dr. Walker organized an expedition and promised Joseph Martin 21,000 acres if his group were first to settle on the land. On March 26, 1769, after an arduous journey through the wilderness and a literal race with a rival expedition, Joseph Martin's group entered Powell's Valley - two weeks ahead of the others.

Joseph Martin and the members of his expedition identified a tract of land near the present-day village of Rose Hill, Virginia. They erected a stockaded fort, some crude cabins, and planted a corn crop. These efforts at settlement proved to be useless, as an Indian attack occurred in the fall of 1769 and the station was abandoned before the corn ripened. Joseph Martin and his men returned to Albemarle County, but retained title to their land.

Joseph Martin would not be long absent from the station, and in January 1775 returned to Powell's Valley with a party of 16 or 18 men. They set about to build a more permanent station, which included four or five cabins for the men and a stockade, on the site of the old station. John Redd, one of the men with Joseph Martin in this endeavor left the following description of the 1775 station:

Martin's Fort was on Martin's Creek. The fort was located on the north side of the creek. There were some 5 or 6 cabins; these built some 20 feet apart with strong stockades between. In these stockades there were port holes. The station contained about half an acre of ground. The shape was a parallelogram. There were two fine springs near the station on its north side.

The importance of the station greatly increased when on 17 March 1775 the thirty-two million acre Transylvania Purchase between Judge Richard Henderson and the Cherokee Indians was finalized at the Sycamore Shoals of the Watauga River. Joseph Martin was appointed by Henderson as an agent and entry taker, a duty that would keep him constantly moving in and out of Martin's Station. As the last fortified station along the Wilderness Road prior to reaching the new lands Henderson was opening in Kentucky, Martin's Station was a well-known stop for the early settlers.
One can read more about it in Mark A. Baker's "Sons of a Trackless Forest".

Notes from the gun shop...

Yesterday was a pretty uneventful day. Only did 4 transfers/background checks. There was a technological glitch and two of the backgrounds were delayed for about 2 hours. Did see a couple of interesting guns but they were interesting for the wrong reason.

#1 was a Mauser Commercial C96. Somebody had told the owner it dated to 1911 and was worth about $2500. It might well date to 1911. It was NOT worth $2500. Patches of blue showed through the rust with serious pitting in some places. The grips were dry but in moderately good condition considering the rest of the gun. The bore seemed to have some pitting even though the rifling was mostly there. The travel surfaces seemed fairly clean. An ugly gun that would shoot. Owner then claimed he didn't know anything about the guns (although I thought he did know quite a lot aside from the value). Made me think that he was trying to intimidate or fool us into taking the gun for more than it is worth. I priced it at $250-300. Owner leaves with gun.

#2 was more of the same. Owner called and said he had a Colt Frontier worth $1200 and would we be interested. I said we'd have to see it. Owner arrives with gun. Gun is Colt duotone Frontier Scout (not the one illustrated). Much bluing worn off, there was some rust & staining and it won't lock up correctly. Also has Franzite stag grips. The owner asked only for value (a "clever" ploy often used). I told him what I thought it was worth. He then allows that he wants to sell it. I remind him that my estimate is RETAIL NOT WHOLESALE and call boss man over (he does the buying). He proceeds to tell boss man it is worth $700. I left so that I could react without being seen. Such people are dishonest and I can't hide my disdain. Boss man offers $125 (which I think is too much to offer) and in the end pays $200.

What is it about people that they think they can fool you when you do business buying and selling a certain product. That is just like me telling my Nissan dealer my 2001 XTERRA is worth $36,000.

So those were most of the highlights EXCEPT that the boss shows off a S&W 66 that is a Puerto Rico law enforcement trade-in. These are stainless and have the lock. The wholesale price is in the $440 range for an "excellent" gun. These are guns taken in by S&W on trade for M&P pistols and re-conditioned by S&W before they are sold.

The Lipsey's .44 Special Vaquero - Charter and the original .44 Bulldog

Built on the New Vaquero frame, Lipsey's has announced blue and stainless, 3-3/4 and 4-5/8" .44 Specials. These should be the ticket for those wanting small, simple field guns and for those CAS shooters using the .44 Special in their rifles.

Meanwhile, Charter Arms will supposedly be releasing the .44 Special Bulldog in the original 3" barrel format. I would buy that gun.

Notes from the gun shop...

Boy, were we busy yesterday I got there at 9 AM and we really didn't stop until AFTER closing at 5:30.

For those tracking the performance of the Virginia background check system, we did 9 background checks. 2 were delayed. The first of those was approved within 1 hour. The second was a bit of a problem, almost losing a sale.

The individual purchased a revolver and used his 15 day old CHP as the second I.D. The background approval was held up for 4 hours because the center didn't have a record of the CHP. We had to fax it. That the customer was STILL there instead of out and about awaiting our call was the only reason we had it to fax to them. It still took another 45 minutes to resolve and apparently that only after the boss man got on the phone and complained that he was going to lose the sale over the problem. What held up the approval in the first place was apparently (because they won't come out and tell you why) this was the second handgun purchase in 30 days and they didn't think the CHP was valid.

Frankly, this irritates ME because every person that can input backgrounds goes through a background (including fingerprinting yet again) check and we actually look at the second I.D. I put the CHP number on the state form so that I can refer to it. This isn't the first time this has happened.

Last week a fellow told me about his experience with the center not having a record of his CHP. Also, I got a call from the center in my first weeks about the CHP number. I was quizzed as to the source of the number as the caller (we don't know their positions) apparently couldn't believe that I actually looked at the CHP to record the number...

There were no really neat or unusual firearms to come through the shop. That's one thing I look forward to experiencing.

We did receive quite a bit of ammunition. A case of Winchester .380 ACP ball. We even got 5 boxes of .41 Magnum. The retail on that after our markup (a rather modest markup compared to others in our area), $59.99! I'm glad I reload! We also got some .30-30 CoreLokt in both 150 and 170 gr. bullet loads.

Intel Categorization/Source Rating

The Army/Military has a system of rating intelligence such that one can determine how reliable/credible the information might be.  One can use the system to give one a basis for evaluating the people one deals with everyday.  It certainly helps to avoid over-reacting to office water cooler talk!  A shooter can apply this rating system to his shooting buddy's reloading advice, recommendation for a boat motor, or even to dating advice.

Source Rating
Code Source Rating Explanation
A Reliable No doubt of authenticity, trustworthiness, or competency; has a history of complete reliability
B Usually Reliable Minor doubt about authenticity, trustworthiness, or competency; has a history of valid information most of the time
C Fairly Reliable Doubt of authenticity, trustworthiness, or competency but has provided valid information in the past
D Not Usually Reliable Significant doubt about authenticity, trustworthiness, or competency but has provided valid information in the past
E Unreliable Lacking in authenticity, trustworthiness, and competency; history of invalid information
F Cannot Be Judged No basis exists
Information Content Rating
Code Rating Explanation
1 Confirmed Confirmed by other independent sources; logical in itself; consistent with other information on the subject
2 Probably True Not confirmed; logical in itself; consistent with other information on the subject
3 Possibly True Not confirmed; reasonably logical in itself; agrees with some other information on the subject
4 Doubtfully True Not confirmed; possible but not logical; no other information on the subject
5 Improbable Not confirmed; not logical in itself; contradicted by other information on the subject
6 Cannot Be Judged No basis exists

Thus a fireman standing in front of a burning building telling you it is a complete loss is likely an A-1 source while Rosie O'Donnell talking about Building #7 at the World Trade Center is likely a E-5.

I was told that Gabe Suarez distills it to this:

"Tin-foilishness" (TF for short) is stuff found on militia forums, or from the doom-and-gloom crowd. You know...the sort of thing that never gets printed here.

"Somewhat credible" (SC) is what they may term "hearsay evidence" in the legal world. This means that someone overheard someone else saying something about something he overheard. This would never convict anyone, but still bears some attention.

"Very credible" (VC) is stuff that comes directly from friends in the intelligence world usually under the "don't tell them where you got this", and "change some of the details so it won't come back to me" categories.
